Dennis D. Downing

Dennis D. Downing, 72, of Cambridge, passed away Monday, August 10, 2015, at his home surrounded by his family.  A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, August 14th at Cambridge United Methodist Church.  Pastor Dave Joyce will officiate. Cremation Rites have been accorded.  A visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday at the church.  Vandemore Funeral Home and Cremation Services is assisting the family with arrangements.  Memorials may be made to Cambridge Cares or Backpack Blessings in care of Cambridge United Methodist Church.

Dennis was born on October 8, 1942, in Geneseo, IL, the son of Ernest and Cleone (Loding) Downing.  He graduated from Cambridge High School in 1960.  He was united in marriage to Jeane Holke on September 18, 1976, in Edford Township.   Dennis was a lifetime farmer and also drove semi-trucks for CSI Manufacturing.

Dennis was a member of Cambridge United Methodist Church.  He enjoyed his horses and horse-drawn vehicles.  He was the first in the area to raise Norwegian Fjord horses.  His horses were sold in many states, including two rare grey stallions in Wyoming and Texas.  Dennis also raised several buffalos and one longhorn.  Dennis was proud of his family and enjoyed spending time with them.

He is survived by his wife, Jeane; his son, Zane (Crista) Downing of Cambridge; grandchildren, Kendra and Emily; and his sister, Odetta Leff.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Bill Leff.

The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. McCaw, Dr. Garneau, Deanna, and all the angels at Unity Point Hospice for their wonderful care.
