L. Joseph Buysse, 68, of rural Prophetstown, passed away Tuesday, November 29, 2016, surrounded by his family at Hillcrest Home, Geneseo. A Funeral Mass celebrating his life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Atkinson. Father S. Stephen Engelbrecht will celebrate.  Burial will follow at St. Anthony Cemetery, Atkinson, where Military Honors will be accorded by Atkinson American Legion.  Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. on Friday at Vandemore Funeral Home in Atkinson, where a Rosary will be recited at 2:30 p.m.  Memorials may be made to Abilities Plus in Kewanee or Movember Foundation.

 

Joe was born on March 27, 1948, in Geneseo, IL, the son of Lester and Mabel (Kemmis) Buysse.  He graduated from Atkinson High School in 1966 and attended Bradley University.  He proudly served in the US Army National Guard.  He was united in marriage to Jill Carmichael on July 25, 1970, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Atkinson.  Joe farmed in rural Prophetstown and was a Pioneer seed representative with Atkinson Grain & Fertilizer.

 

Joe was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and the Atkinson American Legion.  He loved going to Mopar car shows, watching the Bears and Blackhawks, and listening to the blues.  He loved being outdoors, but most of all he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

 

He is survived by his wife, Jill, daughter, Brooke (Brad) Evans of St. Paul, MN,  and son, Josh (Lauren) Buysse of Palatine, IL. His grandchildren are Joey and Ava Evans and Madeline Buysse. He also is survived by his brother, James (Mary Jane “Jill”) Buysse, Riverside, CA, brother-in-law, Keith Fecteau, Sault Ste. Marie, MI, and several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Barbara Fecteau.
