July 26, 1923 ~ February 2, 2016 (age 92) 92 Years Old

Joseph L. Glattly, 92, of Atkinson, IL passed away Tuesday, February 2nd, 2016 at Hillcrest Home, Geneseo, surrounded by family.  A Funeral Mass celebrating his life will be held at 10 am on Saturday February 6th at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Geneseo.  Military Honors for Joe will be accorded following the Mass by the Don Cherry VFW Post #5083. A burial will be at Durant Cemetery in Durant, IA on Saturday afternoon.  A visitation will be held from 5-7 pm on Friday at Vandemore Funeral Home & Crematory, Atkinson.  In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Atkinson Rescue Squad, Geneseo Maple City Band, or Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Geneseo. 

 

Joe was born July 26, 1923 in Creston, IA to Charles and Irma (Putt) Glattly. He grew up in Oskaloosa, IA, and became a professional musician at age 18 before entering WWII from 1943-1946.  He attended the University of Iowa and graduated with an MA in Music.  At Iowa, he continued to play music professionally and was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.  He married Sandra Frick of Durant, IA in 1953.  His career as a music teacher included positions in Durant, IA; Coralville, IA; and Atkinson, IL for 23 years.

 

Joe's passions were his family, music, and community.  Joe was a proficient clarinet and saxophone player.  He also composed many pieces for big band and concert band.  He was an active member of the Geneseo Maple City Band for over 50 years. Joe also wrote, performed, and coordinated the musical arrangements for the Atkinson Rolle Bolle Band. Being active in his community was an important part of Joe's life. He served as President of the Atkinson Kiwanis Club and President of the Atkinson Library Board.  He was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Geneseo for 55 years and also volunteered at Hammond Henry Hospital.

 

Survivors include his wife Sandra; son Mark (Jonna) Glattly, Malibu, CA; daughter-in-law Lori Glattly, Lake Forest, IL; grandchildren, Brittany, Heather, Grant (Courtney), Paige; great-grandchildren, Craig and Taylor.

 

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his son Craig in 2006, and his brother Bob.
