Lowell was born on September 11, 1933, in Hillsboro, KS. He was the son of Edwin and Hilda (Remple) Ewert and graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1951. He participated in multiple sports while in high school. He was most talented at basketball. In his younger years, he farmed with his father, milking 40 cows, twice daily, as well as planting and combining wheat and corn. Lowell married Joyce LaVon Boehringer on November 3, 1951, in Hillsboro. Lowell continued to farm with his father until the summer of 1955 when he began working as a welder for Buller Manufacturing. In 1964, Lowell, Joyce, and their four daughters moved to Newton, KS. He worked in sales at a company that built tractor cabs. Lowell and his family moved to Geneseo, IL in 1967, and he began working as a sales manager for Morton Building Inc. in Atkinson, IL. Lowell had a 25-year career at Morton Buildings, and earned many trips through his successes, giving he and Joyce the opportunity to travel worldwide. After retiring from Morton Buildings, Lowell worked in real estate for 12 years.

Lowell’s commitment to the Geneseo community was unwavering. In 1984, he was appointed as 1st Ward alderman, a position he faithfully held for 25 years. He retired from the City Council in 2012. During his tenure on the Council, Lowell was also a member of the Geneseo Park Board and Geneseo Public Service Board. He loved working for the people of Geneseo. He was committed to the development of the Richmond Hill soccer fields, the new city hall and police department, the new municipal building, and the completion of North City Park. Lowell also spent his retirement years as a landscaper at the Geneseo Country Club, was a 25-year volunteer for the Quad City Airshow, and was an employee at Fareway Grocery Store, where he enjoyed seeing people and helping them each day.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, of 66 years, Joyce; daughters, Cheryl Ewert (Dave Stedwell) of LeClaire, IA, Beverly (Rich) Anderson of Bettendorf, IA, Janelle (Bill) Dale of Geneseo, IL, and Virginia (Jay) Sears, of Geneseo, IL.
