Marvin D. Scranton, 87, of Geneseo, passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2017, at Hammond Henry Hospital in Geneseo, IL. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, December 9, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Malachy Catholic Church in Geneseo. Father Michael Pakula will celebrate. Burial will follow at North Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by the Don Cherry VFW Post 5083. Visitation will take place on Friday, December 8, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Vandemore Funeral Home & Crematory, Geneseo, where a scripture service will be held at 6:45 p.m. Memorials may be left to St. Malachy Catholic Church or to G.E.F (Geneseo Education Foundation).

 

Marvin was born on June 12, 1930, the son of Earl A. and Gertrude (Williams) Scranton, in Aledo, IL. On June 25, 1983, Marvin married Ellen M. Garrity in Geneseo. He received his B.S. in Education in 1966, and then a Master in the field in 1970, from Western Illinois University. Marvin received the Chief School Business Official Endorsement from Northern Illinois University in 1980. He was a teacher at Joy Consolidated Grade School in Joy, IL from 1950-1952. Marvin began his military career with the United States Army in 1952, during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge from the military in 1954, Marvin returned to his teaching career. He taught at the New Boston Grade School in New Boston, IL from 1954-1960, and then at Westmer District in Joy, IL from 1960-1967 and became principal & elementary coordinator there in 1967-68. In August of 1968, Marvin moved to Geneseo where he taught at the junior high school for three years. After teaching for three years in Geneseo, he became the principal of the Geneseo Junior High for six years. Following his time as principal in Geneseo, he worked as business manager for the Geneseo Community Unity District #228 from July 1, 1977 to his retirement in 1985. After retirement he worked at Farm and Fleet for 7 years and then started school bus driving for Pinks in 1992 up until the present day. Marvin and his wife Ellen enjoyed traveling, especially to Arizona. Marvin was a pilot, and had experience in piloting small planes. From his years in education, Marvin came to love undertaking the student exchange program. He enjoyed working in his vegetable garden. Marvin was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Cursillo, Quad City School Business Officials, Illinois Association of School Business Officials, and the Association of School Business Officials of the United States and Canada.

 

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Ellen, brother, Jerry Scranton, Independence, MO, sister Karel Deckmann, Elk Grove Village, IL, sisters-in-law, Mary Thompson, Geneseo, and Kathryn Combs, Kewanee, and brother-in-law, Joseph (Shirley) Garrity, Geneseo. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces & great-nephews.

 

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Gertrude, brother, Earl “Bud” Scranton, and sister, Jane Bryant.
