Life Legacy


Esther A. Nicol, 91 of Atkinson, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, July 19, 2010 at her home. Funeral Mass celebrating her life will be held 10:00 am Friday, July 23, 2010 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Atkinson. Rev. Michael Monclova will celebrate. Burial will be in the St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Atkinson. Visitation for Esther will be held 5:00 – 7:00 pm Thursday at Vandemore Funeral Home Ltd., Atkinson. Memorials may be directed to Atkinson Fire and Rescue Squad & Atkinson Kiwanis Club.

Esther was born on February 8, 1919 in Sterling, IL the daughter of the late Fred W. and Andrea “Hansine” (Jensen) Hagerman. She graduated from Rock Falls High School in 1937, and also from Michael Reese Hospital, Chicago as an Infant Nurse. After 18 years of service as a Nurse’s Aide, she retired from Hammond-Henry Hospital, Geneseo in 1985. Esther was united in marriage to William C. “Connie” Nicol on September 1, 1941 by Monsignor Krug of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sterling; he preceded her in death in 1966. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Atkinson. Esther loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and her special friend Magic.

Survivors include her daughter Karen Nicol & life companion Gaye Lynn, Geneseo; two sons and daughter-in-law Richard & Marilyn Nicol, Geneva, IL; Matthew Nicol, Perrysburg, OH; three grandchildren Tracy Ann Nicol, Geneva; Jessica Nicol White and her husband Chris White, Colona; and Joseph Nicol and wife Dawn, Lake Zurich, IL; as well as nieces and nephews and her loving cat, Magic.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister Alice Ann Lundstrom and a grandchild.
