Biography

Maxine V. Carlson, 85, of Geneseo, IL, passed away Sunday, July 25, 2010 at Hammond-Henry Hospital Emergency Room, Geneseo. Funeral services celebrating her life will be held 10:00 am Friday, July 30, 2010 at Vandemore Funeral Home Ltd, Geneseo. Rev. Dr. David Esche will officiate. Burial will be Friday at Oakwood Cemetery, Geneseo. Visitation for Maxine will be from 4-7 pm Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Hammond-Henry Cardiac Rehab, (Hillcrest Home), or First Presbyterian Church.

Maxine was born on April 19, 1925 in Rock Island the daughter of Clarence Ryker and Jewel Rogers, and was later adopted by Edmund VanColen. After graduation from Rock Island High School, she met and married Marlo (Swede) Carlson in August 1947; he preceded her in death. She was a 53 year member of First Presbyterian Church. Maxine also was a member of the Presbyterian Women of the church and a charter member of TOPS Chapter 443. She enjoyed going to Cardiac Rehab and was recognized for her devotion to exercise by having the highest attendance record ever, despite having Multiple Sclerosis for over 40 years. Maxine also enjoyed bowling, bicycling, swimming and golfing in her earlier years and was active in the Geneseo Junior Women's Club. She continued to enjoy her friends made through the years by having coffee and fellowship with her friends.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law Karen & Dale Unglesbee, Overland Park, KS; Julanne & Jim Lobaito, Altoona, IA; a son David Carlson, Geneseo; eight grandchildren Tammy Maness, Jennifer Rucker, Mike Carlson, Matthew Carlson, Anthony, Justin & Angela Lobaito, Jeremy Schneckloth, eight great grandchildren, a sister Judith VanColen, Rock Island; several half brothers and sisters and special friend Cynthia Gragg, Geneseo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and a sister.

Maxine’s family would like to extend a special thank you to caretakers Cindy & Joe Gragg, Janice Achterhof, Beverly Herrick, Hillcrest Home and Hammond-Henry Hospital Cardiac Rehab.
