Stephen A. Gerhardt, 65, of Geneseo, IL passed away Monday, October 26, 2020, at Trinity Unity Point in Bettendorf, IA. Family and friends of Steve may call from 4 to 7 pm on Friday, October 30, 2020, at Vandemore Funeral Home – Geneseo Chapel. Private funeral services celebrating Steve’s life will be Saturday, October 31, 2020, at First United Methodist Church in Geneseo, IL. The Reverend Dr. Chris Ritter will officiate. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Hospital and American Cancer Society.
Steve was born on February 20, 1955 at Moline Lutheran Hospital in Moline, IL, the son of Frederick F. Gerhardt and Bessie M. Henninger Gerhardt. He married Ruth Johnson on June 30, 2000, at Spring Valley Church in Fulton, IL. He graduated in the top ten of his class from United Township High School in 1973. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Augustana College and a master’s degree from St. Ambrose University. Steve retired in January 2020, from John Deere, after 43 years working in IT. Steve was known for his love of his family, his ever-present laugh, and his ability to make anyone smile. He was especially fond of his grandkids and they loved their Peepa Steve/Papa. Steve always was happy to talk with anyone who crossed his path. He was an avid fan of Star Trek, comic books, and Pink Floyd. He loved to travel and one of his favorite places to visit was the Rocky Mountains in Colorado where he spent many wonderful summers with friends and family.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Ruth; son, Ben (Meredith) Gerhardt, Henderson, NV; daughter, Lisa Gerhardt, Davenport, IA; stepdaughters, Sara (Nicoli) Newsom, Oklahoma City, OK and Becky (Jeoval) Johnson Souza, Brazil; and stepson, Ben (Kelita) Johnson, Morrison, IL; eleven grandchildren, Rylin and Konnelly Gerhardt, Brenyn, Malachi, Asher, and Aviah Newsom, Hineni Souza, and Zander, Selah, Haven, and Thaddeus Johnson; sister, Barbara (Rodney) Searle; brother, Jim (Pat) Gerhardt; and many nieces and nephews.
Steve touched the lives of everyone he knew whether it was for an hour or many years. His life and memory will not be forgotten, and he will live on each day in the hearts of those who loved him.
