Clinton Thompson Obituary

Clinton G. Thompson, 98, of Sheffield, passed away on Friday, June 22, 2018, at Good Samaritan in Geneseo. Cremation rites have been accorded. A graveside inurnment service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 20, 2018, at Floral Hill Cemetery in Neponset, IL, where military honors will take place. Vandemore Funeral Home & Crematory, Geneseo, is assisting with these arrangements.

Clinton was born on December 4, 1919, the son of Hermie and Mae (Johnson) Thompson, in Thomas, IL. He graduated from Manlius High School. Clinton was married to Louise Tucker. The couple spent 61 years together before Louise preceded Clinton in death in 2008. Clinton served in the Navy all through WWII, in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters. He was employed with the Corps of Engineers as a Hennepin Canal Parkway Ranger for 40 years. During his time as a ranger on the canal, Clinton once saved an eight-year-old girl from possibly drowning after she fell into the lock area. He received an appreciation award from the Illinois Department of Conservation. Clinton will be remembered as a loving father, hard worker, and having had a playful spirit.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters, Cheryl Smith, of Alamogordo, NM, and Sandra Ballard, of Kewanee, IL, three grandsons, Adam Smith, Matthew Smith, and Shaun Ballard, six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.

Clinton was preceded in death by his parents, Hermie and Mae, wife, Louise, brother, Gilbert Thompson, and sister, Neva Cochrane.
