Don R. Martin

Don R. Martin, 72, of Atkinson, IL, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, December 6, 2017, at Hammond Henry Hospital Emergency Room. Funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 9, at Vandemore Funeral Home & Crematory, Atkinson, where military honors will be accorded by the Atkinson American Legion following the service. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the funeral, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family requests that memorials be left to the Don Martin Memorial Fund. Cremation rites have been accorded to follow the services.

Don was born on September 17, 1945, the son of Raymond and Arlene (Jackson) Martin, in Kewanee, IL. He was a graduate of Kewanee High School, class of 1963. Don married Barbara Vandersnick on July 6, 1974, in Atkinson. He was a mechanic and worked for Verstraete's Garage in Atkinson for ten years. Don then worked for the Village of Atkinson, making it his career for 37 years. He served the Atkinson Fire Department for 30 years. Don was a Henry County Farm Bureau member and belonged to the Atkinson American Legion. He was a very talented mechanic and enjoyed working on cars and tractors. Don was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Barb; son, Brock Martin, Kewanee; two granddaughters, Hannah and Eliana; and his sister, Ethel (Mike) Pries, Geneseo.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Arlene, and by an infant brother.
