Joan D. Schmidt, 87, a resident of the Senior Star Care at Elmore Place in Davenport, IA, formerly of Geneseo, passed away on Wednesday, October 10, 2018, at Senior Star Care. A private graveside funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 23, 2018, at the Rock Island National Cemetery. Reverend Melva England will officiate. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday, October 22, 2018, at Vandemore Funeral Home & Crematory, Geneseo Chapel. Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church in Geneseo.
Joan was born on March 23, 1931, the daughter of Arthur and Daisy (Searle) Durling, in New Rochelle, NY. After high school, Joan received her Medical Secretary certification. Joan was united in marriage to Harry J. Schmidt in 1952. Harry preceded her in death in 2014. She worked as a medical secretary for a surgeon in New Jersey for many years. After moving to Geneseo, she worked for Four Seasons, the Geneseo Telephone Company, and Guzzardo's Hallmark store, all in Geneseo. She was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church in and belonged to the Christian Women’s Club, where she had served as past president. Joan was the leader of bible studies and the bible study fellowship group at her church. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, and doing arts and crafts.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Kurt Schmidt, of Davenport, IA; three adopted grandchildren, Amanda Sprott, Jenna Rauh, and Alyssa Jasper; and her twin sister, Jean DiMaria, of New Jersey.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Daisy, her husband, Harry, and two sisters.
