Marvin G. Garlick
Marvin G. Garlick, 72, of Geneseo, passed away on August 16, 2018, at Unity Point Trinity – Rock Island. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 21, 2018, at Vandemore Funeral Home & Crematory, Geneseo Chapel. Deacon Harley Chaffee will officiate. Visitation will take place from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 20, 2018, at the funeral home. Cremation rites will be accorded following the funeral services and a private inurnment will take place at Oakwood Cemetery. In lieu of memorials and statuaries, the family requests that memorials be directed to the Geneseo Humane Society.
Marvin was born on April 27, 1946, the son of Archie M. and Rosalea (Glenn) Garlick, in Macomb, IL. He was a graduate of Rushville High School and attended Black Hawk College and the Illinois State Police Academy. He married Sue Houser on December 30, 1967, at the Rushville United Methodist Church. Marvin grew up on a dairy farm in Doddsville, IL, and showed his family’s prize heifers. He locally began his career in the beef industry at Illini Beef/IBP and Tyson Foods, as assistant sales manager for 40 years, later retiring in 2011. Following Marvin’s retirement, he worked for the City of Geneseo Park Department and was the Geneseo Police Commissioner for many years. He was a member of the Geneseo Moose Lodge and an avid NASCAR and Chicago Cubs fan. Marvin enjoyed cooking and gardening, taking pride in keeping his yard well-manicured. He was quick to help his neighbors and cherished his memories and friends he made in Rushville, Atkinson, and Geneseo. He will be missed by his loyal companion and four-legged buddy, Kenny. Most of all, Marvin loved being Poppie to Elliott, Hattie, and Bennett.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Sue, daughter, Carrie (Brian Kostka) Garlick, of Libertyville, IL, and their children, Elliott, Hattie, and Bennett, brother, Donnie (Kathy) Garlick, of Macomb, IL, nephews, Mike (Casey) Garlick, Matt (Pam Stoneking) Garlick, Eddie Green, Bill (Laurel) LeSage, John (Lori) LeSage, niece, Jane (Matt) Stropes, many great-nieces and great-nephews, and a brother-in-law, Ronnie Fowler, of Brooklyn, IL.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Rosalea, sister, Janice Fowler, niece, Angie Green and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary and Merle LaSage.
