Shirley M. VanVooren, 91, of Durant, IA, formerly of Atkinson, passed away on Tuesday, June 25, 2019, at Genesis Medical Center – East Campus, Davenport, IA. A funeral service celebrating her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 2, 2019, at Vandemore Funeral Homes & Crematory – Atkinson Chapel. Deacon Nick Simon will celebrate. Burial will follow at St. Anthony Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10 – 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 2, 2019, at the funeral home (Atkinson Chapel). Memorials may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Boystown USA.
Shirley was born on July 19, 1927, the daughter of Mel and Elizabeth (VandeVoorde) Carton, in Annawan. Shirley was united in marriage to Robert VanVooren on November 24, 1951, in Atkinson. He preceded her in death on July 15, 2013. She was employed at the Wilton Community Bank as a teller for eight years and a librarian for the Scott County Association in New Liberty, IA. She enjoyed spending time with her family, playing bridge, jigsaw puzzles, and doing crossword puzzles. Shirley loved to fish. She was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Davenport.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Vicki (Gary) Neumann, Durant, Noreen (Russ) Price, Durant, and Sherry Turkal, Port Byron, IL; her son, Craig (Julie) VanVooren, Moline; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Rita (Wayne ) Olson, Cambridge, IL, Roberta Zorza, Grants Pass, OR; and brother, Lawrence (Lois) Carton, Geneseo.
Shirley M. VanVooren was preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert, four brothers, and one sister.
