Obituary

Alfred “Joe” J. Boelens, 81, of Atkinson, IL, passed away on April 8, 2023, at Trinity Hospital-Rock Island. Per his wishes Joe will be cremated and no services held at this time. Memorials can be made in his name to the American Alzheimer’s Association or the American Kidney Foundation. Vandemore Funeral Home & Crematory-Atkinson Chapel is assisting with arrangements.

Joe was born in Geneseo, IL, on May 23, 1941, the son of Alfred and Viola (DeSutter) Boelens. He graduated from Atkinson High School in 1959. He married Patricia Yates on March 12, 1982, and she preceded him in death on December 9, 2020. Joe farmed for over 30 years and drove the school bus for Annawan until retiring in 2022. He was a member of Mineral United Methodist Church. Joe was an avid football fan, loving husband and father. If you knew Joe, you know he always had his loving pet companion “Chuck” with him everywhere he went.

Those left to cherish his memory are children; Bryan Boelens of Sioux Falls, SD, Cathy Hall of Mineral, IL, Gwen Shaw of Long Island, NY and Paula Shaw of Iowa City, IA, 3 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Boelens, parents, Alfred and Viola Boelens, son Mark Boelens and brother, Dick Boelens.
