Berniece M. Cathelyn, 98, of Geneseo, passed away on Saturday, July 5, 2025 at Allure of Geneseo. A mass of christian burial will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2025 at 10 A.M. at St Anthonys Catholic Church in Atkinson, IL. Father S. Stephen Engelbrecht will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Anthonys Catholic Cemetery in Atkinosn, IL. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 11, 2025 from 4 P.M. – 6 P.M. at Vandemore Funeral Home – Atkinson Chapel. A recitation of the rosary will take place prior to visitation at 3:30 P.M. in lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Make a Wish Foundation of Illinois or St. Anthonys Catholic Cemetery.
Berniece Stiner was born on September 27, 1926, in Moline, IL, the daughter of Peter and Selma (Vermost) Stiner. She graduated from St. Marys School in East Moline and attended Moline High School. She married Wilbur Cathelyn on December 1, 1945 in Geneseo. He preceded her in death. Berniece was a member of St. Anthonys Catholic Church in Atkinson. She was formerly employed by Dr. L.N. Wathier, Gramma’s House and retired from Hammond Henry Hospital in 2003.
Those left to cherish her memory include daughter, Carolyn (Ronald “Turk”) VanOpdorp of Atkinson, IL; son, Lynn (Pam) Cathelyn of Atkinson, IL; daughter in law, Carolyn Cathelyn of Annawan, IL; grandchildren, Mike, Cory (Michelle) Cathelyn, Tina Cathelyn, Kim Yackley, Brendon Cathelyn; great grandchildren, Kelsey Behrens, Kiersten Cathelyn, Maddie Evans, Jacob Cathelyn, Emily and Addison Yackley; great great grandchildren Briley and Brody Behrens; and special family friend, Rose Moller.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur; sons, David and Richard Cathelyn; grandchildren Tiffany and Tammy Cathelyn and Carter Yackley.
