Dean E. Lewis

Dean E. Lewis, 98, of Annawan, IL, passed away on Sunday, January 31, 2021, at Hope Creek Care Center, East Moline, IL. A Rosary service will be held at 9:45 a.m. on Friday, February 5, 2021, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Annawan, IL. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00 a.m.  Father S. Stephen Engelbrecht will celebrate. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Vandemore Funeral Homes & Crematory – Atkinson Chapel, will be assisting the family with arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Annawan Library.

Dean was born near the town of Wever, IA, on October 26, 1922, to Avis Lela (Sheppard) and Harry Lewis. He married Imelda Dwyer on December 26, 1951. She passed away in November 2009. Dean was a cabinet builder by trade. That is how he met his friend of over 60+ years, Dave Garrett, when Dean was asked to build cabinets for him. From that friendship, the game of euchre was introduced to Dean and he never stopped playing cards. He was always looking for the next euchre game.

Dean was a man of few words but liked by everyone. He enjoyed his breakfasts and lunches at Lisa’s Place in Atkinson for many, many years… they treated him like family.

Dean is survived by one sister, Lela June Hamilton; sisters-in-law, Evelyn DeSplinter and Mary Ellen Hoogerwerf; and fourteen nieces and nephews. He enjoyed calls, letters, and visits from them over the years.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; brothers, Roy, Sherley, and Harry Lewis, Jr.; and sisters, Verna Johnson and Dorothy Phelps.

The family would like to thank Hospice Compassus for their care and comfort for Dean and also the staff at Hope Creek Care Center for their wonderful care.
