Donna J. Van Opdorp, 79 of Atkinson, IL, passed away on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at Betty’s Garden Memory Care of Kewanee. She was born on October 21, 1944, in Macomb, IL, the daughter of Clifford and Margaret (McCormick) Hopping. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at Vandemore Funeral Homes & Crematory – Atkinson Chapel. Reverend Terry Lancaster will officiate. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at the funeral home. Cremation rites will be accorded and inurnment will be held at a later date at St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery, Atkinson. Memorials may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or any cancer organization that you wish.
She was a wife, a mother, a sister, a grandmother, a great-grandmother, a great-great-grandmother, and a friend.
She is survived by her husband Gerald (Gun) Van Opdorp of Atkinson, two sons; Clifford (Kathy) Painter of Geneseo, IL, and Darryl Painter of Kewanee, IL; one daughter; Aimee Van Opdorp of Kalispell, MT; two step-sons; Rock (Tina) Van Opdorp of Atkinson, IL and Rory (Cat) Van Opdorp of Atkinson, IL; brother; Leroy Hopping of Quincy, IL; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; and one great- great-grandchild.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Margaret Hopping; four brothers; Ronald, Gary, Donald, and Charles Hopping; one sister; Sue Taylor; and one stepson; Ryan Van Opdorp.
Donna had worked as a bus driver for Pink’s Bus Service and at Atkinson/Annawan Hometown Market for over 25 years combined.
Donna was happiest playing rolle bolle. She won numerous trophies including the World Championship Trophy in 2007. Almost every weekend you would find her out on a rolle bolle court with a huge smile on her face and rolle bolle in her hand. She loved playing cribbage with anyone willing to take her on (she beat almost everyone she played), putting puzzles together, numerous card games such as solitaire, euchre, spades, peanuts, hearts, and board games such as The Farming Game, Tri-Ominos, and Quad-Ominos.
Donna loved watching the birds, hummingbirds, and squirrels. She would sit and watch them out her window and enjoyed going outside to feed them.
