Eleanor Woltman Obituary

Eleanor Ann Woltman, 100, of Nashville, IN, formerly of Geneseo, IL, beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, January 25, 2024. A private memorial service celebrating her life will be held at a later date. Per her wishes, cremation rites have been accorded and burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Geneseo.

Eleanor was born on December 23, 1923, at home in rural Morland, KS, the daughter of Frank and Clara (Rome) Bollig. She had five sisters and two brothers; Helen, Irene, Vera, Alice, Dorothy, Eddie and Cletus. Eleanor was raised on a farm and over her 100 years of life she witnessed an extraordinary period of history, remembering the Great Depression and Dust Bowl of the 1930s. She moved to Evanston, IL, where she met and later married Arthur R. Woltman on November 27, 1947. He preceded her in death April 3, 1997, after almost 50 years of marriage. During the Second World War, she worked in a factory making transistors for planes and ships. She later worked as a waitress and telephone switchboard operator for many years.

Arthur and Eleanor raised their family in Evanston, A job transfer led to a relocation to Mason, MI. Retirement brought them to Geneseo in 1989 and Eleanor continued living there until 2014. She was a devout Catholic and attended church regularly. Eventually Eleanor moved to her son’s home in Indiana where she was treated as Queen Eleanor. She was so blessed and happy to be welcomed into their home for more than 10 years.

Eleanor made lifelong friends wherever she lived and kept in touch through visits, cards, and phone calls. Her hand-written notes were warm and thoughtful. Eleanor was kind, gentle and so very patient. She enjoyed bowling, playing cards, quilting, playing piano (a talent she learned at 60 years of age) and was an avid Cubs fan. Eleanor will be missed and forever loved and remembered by numerous “Mutti” memories and stories.

Survivors include children; Peggy (Craig) Betcher of Geneseo, Sandra Woltman of East Moline, IL, and Kenneth (Stacie) Woltman of Nashville; son-in-law, John Irizarry of Canton, GA; five grandchildren; Derek (Heather) Betcher of Geneseo, Jared (Katie Bitting) Betcher of LeClaire, IA, Kelly (Kevin) Kruck of LeClaire, Angela (Chris) Tucker of Canton, and Carla (Paul) Yonadi of Cumming, GA; and 12 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Clara; her seven siblings; her husband, Arthur; and her daughter, Sharon Irizarry.
