George Arnold May, 81, of Atkinson, passed away at his home on Friday, August 9, 2024. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at Vandemore Funeral Homes & Crematory – Atkinson Chapel. Service will be live-streamed on Vandemore Funeral Homes' Facebook page. Reverend Randy Mullin will officiate. Burial will follow at Greenview Memorial Garden, East Moline. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Atkinson Fire & Rescue Squad.
George was born in Valeria, IA, on December 6, 1942, the son of Loran and Bonnie (Fields) May. He was a 1960 graduate of Rock Island High School. On April 28, 1962, George married Verna Marie Rockwell at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, East Moline, IL. She preceded him in death. He was employed for 32 years at John Deere Harvester, East Moline. He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Bears fan. He especially loved his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his dog, Buddy.
Those left to cherish his memory include his sons, Timothy (Donna) May of Manitowoc, WI, and Scott (Cathy) May of Geneseo, IL; daughters, Deborah (Matt) Casteel of Cambridge, IL, and Wendy (Augie) Rodemeyer of Mineral, IL; grandchildren, Kaila Hemphill, Kristin (Alex) Brown, Nick (Sarah) Flood, Lauren (Zack) Chadwick, Derek May, Carolyn (Mike) Lindh, Jeremy May, Jessica (Ryan) Akers, Jenna (Scott Stephens) Casteel, Morgan May; great-grandchildren, Bentley Hemphill, Penelope Hemphill, Jameson Chadwick, Felicity Chadwick, Amelia Akers, Harrison Akers, Molly Battin, Molly Brown, and Mara Brown; and brother, DeWayne May of Centerville, IA.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Loran and Bonnie May; his wife, Verna May; an infant daughter, Penelope; brothers, Wilbur May, Donald May, Eugene May; and sisters, Mary Roberta Haines, and Alice Rosalie Downey.
