Herb Vandersnick Obituary

Mandus Herb Vandersnick, 83, passed away on June 27, 2023, peacefully at home surrounded by his family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 1, 2023, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Atkinson with Rev. S. Stephen Engelbrecht celebrating. Visitation will be held from 4-7 PM Friday, June 30, 2023, at Vandemore Funeral Home & Crematory- Atkinson Chapel. Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 3:30 PM. He will be laid to rest at St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery-Atkinson. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Atkinson Fire and Rescue or St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. Herb was born in Geneseo, IL, on May 27, 1940, the son of Arthur “Babe” and Regina (Fehlman) Vandersnick. He graduated from Atkinson High School in 1958. After graduating he joined the National Guard and was stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. He then joined the U.S. Army Reserves, stationed at Ft. Devens, Mass. He married Maribeth Buysse at St. Anthony’s Church in Atkinson on October 29, 1960.

Herb was a lifelong livestock hog buyer, beginning with his father when he returned home from service. After his father’s death, he started his own business for three years. In 1972 he joined Heinold Hog Markets. He continued with this company until he retired after 50 years in 2022. For many years he raised and showed American quarter horses with his two daughters and wife. Later he ventured into raising and showing cattle along with his nephews Jay and Jason Minnaert.

He was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association, served as a board member for the Illinois Quarter Horse Association for 15 years, was a member of the Iowa Quarter Horse Association and the Illinois Pork Producers. Herb was a lifetime member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and served on the church council and financial committee.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 62 years, Maribeth Vandersnick, daughters, Lisa Vandersnick of Irving, Tx, and Brenda (Troy VanOpdorp) Lotridge of Atkinson, sisters, Sandy (Gary) Sturtewagen of Geneseo and Sally DeDecker of Carbondale, IL, sisters-in-law, Kathy Vandersnick, Jackie Weatherby and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Harold, and Bud Vandersnick.
