Jack Capps Obituary

Jack Ray Capps, 92, of Atkinson, passed away at his home on Thursday, November 6, 2025.  Cremation rites will be accorded, and a private memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2025.  A private inurnment will be held at Spring Creek Cemetery, Atkinson, IL, at a later date.  A memorial visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 21, 2025, at Vandemore Funeral Homes & Crematory – Atkinson Chapel.  A masonic service will be held at 7 P.M. after visitation. In leui of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Jack Capps Memorial Fund, which will be distributed amongst his favorite local charities.

Born September 6, 1933, to Frank R. and Mary (Kirk) Capps, Jack lived a life of honor, love, and dedication. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict (1953–1955). On January 3, 1953, he married his beloved Charlotte Boyer in Bellerive, IL. She preceded him in death on May 24, 2023.

A skilled welder, Jack retired from Case IH/Tenneco, where his strong hands and steadfast work ethic left a lasting mark. Upon retirement, Jack opened a small engine repair business from his home shop.  He was a cherished member of the VFW, Masonic Temple, American Legion, and 40 & 8, always ready to serve his fellow veterans and community.

Jack loved spending time with his family and friends, especially hunting in Southern Illinois at his cabin, and fishing trips with his kids, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends. 

Those left to cherish his memory include his son, Larry Capps of Kingston, GA; daughters, Theresa (Bright) Newhouse III of Rogers, AR, Joyce Paxton of Douglas, WY, and Janette (William) Morgan of Maryville, TN; daughter-in-law, Denise Capps; nineteen grandchildren; thirty-five great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Mary Capps; beloved wife, Charlotte Capps; son, Jerry Capps; grandson, David Capps; granddaughter, Amy Newhouse; great-grandson, Cortaevius Williams; daughter-in-law, Sondra Capps; and five brothers and five sisters.
