John M. Wilcox, 73, of Geneseo, passed away on Wednesday, June 17, 2020, at UnityPoint Health – Trinity West Campus, Rock Island. A private funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 23, 2020, at Vandemore Funeral Homes & Crematory. Burial will follow at the Rock Island National Cemetery. A private visitation will be held prior to the funeral service at the funeral home. A live stream broadcast of the service will be available for family and friends unable to attend the funeral due to COVID restrictions. John was born August 26, 1946, the son of Jackson and Marjorie (Robbins) Wilcox, in St. Paul, MN. He graduated from Marycrest College with a master’s degree in Computer Science. John married Valeria Chernel in 1974, in Sweden. He was employed for over thirty years as a systems analyst at John Deere, and then employed as a computer analyst for the Child Support Division of North Dakota. He was a member of the National Rifle Association (NRA). John enjoyed beekeeping, woodworking, making beer, making knives, canning, gardening, raising chickens, smoking meat, and most of all taking care of his family.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Valeria; children, Catherine (Nicholas) Veerhusen, Atkins, IA, William (Jessica) Wilcox, Davenport, IA, Victoria (Michael) Hinds, Simla, CO, and Burton (Christine) Wilcox, Northglenn, CO; grandchildren, Jaxson and Ayriana Veerhusen, Dylan, Austin, Nolan-Ryan, Jaden, Annabelle, and Summer-Lynn Hinds; sisters, Judy (Louie) Sewell, Porterville, CA, Deborah (Randolph) Altermatt, Seward, AK, and Libbie (Ronald) Giddings, Bonney Lake, WA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jackson, and Marjorie.
