Larry Robert Barnes

Larry Robert Barnes, 82, of Geneseo, passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at his home.  A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at Vandemore Funeral Homes & Crematory – Geneseo Chapel.  Reverend Terry Lancaster will officiate.  A memorial visitation will be held from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m., prior to the memorial service at the funeral home.  Memorials may be directed to the Larry R. Barnes Memorial Fund to be distributed amongst local charities.

Larry was born December 23, 1940, the son of Robert and Marjorie (Tohren) Barnes, in Oskaloosa, IA.  He was employed at Baker’s Dairy for over sixteen years and then as a machinist at Caterpillar Inc.  On May 4, 1975, Larry married Carolyn Hamilton Hatcher at a service held in Edgington, IL.  He was a member of First Lutheran Church – Geneseo, loved casinos, bowling and playing pool when younger, playing cards – belonging to local card clubs, gardening, was an avid Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears fan, enjoyed boating, and his place on the river where he retired.  Larry especially enjoyed woodworking projects for the grandkids over the years.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Carolyn Barnes; children, Bill Barnes of Beaumont, TX, Kraig Hatcher of Geneseo, IL, Shari (John) Morotti of Las Vegas, NV, and Kelly Johnson of Geneseo, IL; eight grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; sister, Linda (“Skip” Louis) Bouchard of Gold Hills, OR.

Larry was preceded in death by his parent, Robert and Marjorie Barnes; son, Alan (Al) Barnes; stepson, Kerry Hatcher, great-grandson, Carter Tjarks; brother, David Barnes; and sister, Elaine Slaight.
