Lois Garcia Obituary

Lois Marie Garcia, age 70, of Ankeny, Iowa, formerly of Erie, Illinois, passed away after a lengthy battle with breast cancer on Friday, December 22, 2023 at EveryStep Kavanagh House in Des Moines, Iowa.  A visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at Vandemore Funeral Home, Geneseo, Illinois.  Cremation rites will be accorded following the visitation.  Burial of her cremated remains will take place at a later date in St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery, Atkinson, Illinois.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Erie Food Pantry in her memory.  If sending a card or memorial to the family, please send it to Bentley Funeral Home, C/O Tony Garcia, PO Box 817, Durant, IA, 52747.

Lois was born on January 31, 1953, the daughter of Clarence “Toot” and Mathilda “Tillie” (Desbro) VanDeWoestyne in Geneseo, Illinois.  She graduated from Atkinson High School with the Class of 1971.  Lois married her high school sweetheart, Robert, on July 1, 1972 in St. Anthony Catholic Church, Atkinson.

Lois was a devoted wife, and mother, who loved taking care of her family.  Before working outside the home, Lois babysat teacher’s children for many years, forming loving connections with each of them.  Lois received her auto insurance license and worked for Neese-Kimball Insurance Agency, retiring in 2014.  She loved the Erie community and during her retirement played a vital role in the Erie Food Pantry. Her true passion, however, was her home and tending to her beautiful flower gardens.  In 2019, Lois and Robert moved to Ankeny to be closer to their daughter, Mandy, and her family.  In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, camping, cycling and her dog, Lucy, who was affectionately known as her “third child”.  Most of all, her heart belonged to her family, especially her grandchildren.

Lois will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Robert; two children, Mandy (Rob) Saner of Ankeny and Tony (Chrystal) Garcia of Durant, Iowa; five grandchildren, Ava and Ben Saner, and Alivia, Aaron, and Aubrey Garcia; one nephew, Dan Jones and Juliana Cyril of Decatur, Georgia; and one niece, Brenda Jones and Steve Wilkinson, and their daughter, Josie, of Somers, New York.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Toot and Tillie; one sister, Teresa VanDeWoestyne; and an infant brother, Billy Joe.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
