Mary E. Hoogerwerf, 96, of Annawan, passed away on February 20, 202, at Hammond Henry Long-Term Care in Geneseo. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, February 24, 2021, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Annawan. Reverend S. Stephen Engelbrecht will officiate. There will be a rosary at 9:45 am. A visitation will start at 9:00 am, prior to the service. Mary will be laid to rest at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Vandemore Funeral Homes & Crematory – Atkinson Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. Memorials can be made in Mary's name to the Annawan Fire and Rescue.
Mary was born on September 24, 1924, in Geneseo, IL, the daughter of John and Alice (Lavery) Dwyer. She married Gerald Hoogerwerf on November 24, 1945. He preceded her in death. Mary was a life member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and served on the Altar and Rosary Society. She spent her life raising her children and grandchildren and that was her greatest joy. The family would like to thank Hammond Henry Long-Term Care and Woodridge Assisted Living for all the loving care given to Mary.
She is survived by her children, Janice (Mike) Wyffels, Connie (Shad) Simmons, and Mary Ann (Jim) Koning; sister, Evelyn DeSplinter; daughter-in-law, Vickie Farrel; grandchildren, Erin (Jarrod) Hamer, Matthew (Molly) Hoogerwerf, Brian (Erin) Wyffels, Brent (Chris) Wyffels, Brad Wyffels, Brock (Kate) Wyffels, Amy (Jayson) Park, Chad (Brittany) Koning, Stacy (Mark) Klockenga, Kelsey Koning, Katie (Matt) Frakes, Kindra Leamen, and Cody Leamen; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; son, John Hoogerwerf; infant daughter, Katherine Hoogerwerf; sister, Imelda Lewis; and grandson, Nolan Hoogerwerf.
