Odetta J. Thompson, 98, of Annawan passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at Hammond Henry Hospital – Long Term Care, Geneseo. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 24, 2024, at Zion Methodist Church, Hooppole, IL. Reverend Terry Lancaster will officiate. Burial will follow at Hooppole Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, 2024, at Vandemore Funeral Homes & Crematory – Atkinson Chapel. Memorials may be directed to the Annawan Community Church, 201 S. Main Street, Annawan, IL, 61234, and Annawan Ladies Service Club.
Odetta was born August 28, 1925, the daughter of Robert and Rebecca (Angus) Boyd. Her parents were Irish immigrants. On March 11, 1944, she married Calvin C. Thompson at a service held at the Presbyterian Church in Geneseo, IL. Odetta was loved by many and will be missed by all. She was proud of her culinary skills and pie baking, was a member of Annawan Community Church, and a former member of Zion Methodist Church.
Surviving are two daughters: Charlotte (Gary) Rakestraw of Mineral, Susan Thompson of Silvis, a son, David (Patti) Thompson of Prophetstown; nine grandchildren: Jeff (Suzanne) Rakestraw, Melissa Rakestraw, Krista (Sergio) Badani, Lyn (Darrin) Shasteen, Justin (Brooke) Thompson, Shelley (Tom) Church, Melanie (Damian) DeMay, Kathryn (Jon Carstens) Thompson, and William Thompson; nineteen great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and three sisters-in-law: Judy Hanson, Carol Boyd, and Bev Chrisop.
Odetta was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Rebecca Boyd; husband, Calvin Thompson; son, Ernest Thompson; two brothers, Warren Boyd and Elwood Boyd; a sister, Margaret Boyd Thompson; and a grandson, Taylor Thompson.
