Phyllis A. Henderson, 71, of Coal Valley, IL, passed away on Thursday, April 15, 2021 at Clarissa Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, IA. Reverend Daniel Gifford will conduct a family only service at 4:00 p.m. on April 19th. A memorial visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, April 19 at Vandemore Funeral Home, Geneseo Chapel. The Rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. The Rosary and family service will be live-streamed at https://www.vandemorefuneralhome.com/live-stream. The inurnment will be at a later date at St. Anthony Cemetery, Atkinson.
Phyllis was born on October 31, 1949, to John and Elsie (Cauwels) DeClercq in Geneseo, IL. She graduated from Geneseo High School. She received a degree in education from Western Illinois University. She began her teaching career at United Township High School. Phyllis opened her own pre-school, Luv N’ Learn, and finished teaching kindergarten in the Moline School District.
She enjoyed Motown music (especially Lionel Ritchie), dancing, and socializing with friends and family, with a rum and Diet Coke in hand. She was fond of her monthly card games with friends, live outdoor music, and short, overnight getaways. Her laughter was contagious, and her sense of humor made all conversations entertaining.
She is survived by her mother, Elsie; children, Stacey Henderson, Bryan (Kelsey) Henderson, Nicole (Bobby McClellan) Henderson; sister, Mary (Dick) Ghys; grandchildren, Myiah Henderson, Devin White, Dayten White, Blair and Hallie Henderson, and Lillian and Connor McClellen; and great-grand-daughter, Jocelynn; and long-time companion, Tom Lidholm.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her father, John; and infant sister, Leona.
Phyllis’ compassion for all animals was consistent throughout her life. Memorials may be made to the Rock Island County Humane Society.
