Today (July 27, 2017} I went searching for a shipmate from my days on the USS Intrepid (CVA-11). How sad that I had to come to this memorial page. Chuck and I were in X division on the Intrepid and we did a one hour radio show on the Intrepid's radio station (WINT). We laughed more than anything else. He did a great impression of Bob Newhart. Rest in peace shipmate.

To all of The Claeys Family,
I just learned of Chuck's passing and my heart hurts for you. I absolutely loved working with him at Knobby's, a few Thanksgiving dinners at your house, and so many other events he was at. His laughter was contagious! I wish I had been able to go to the visitation. Please know each one of you are in my thoughts and prayers. The Chuck stories will keep him in our memories recalling all the fun times. God has truly called one of the good guys home. They are probably playing rolle bolle!
R.I.P. my friend!
With sincere sympathy,
Phylis

I was very sad to hear about the passing of Chuck. My condolences to the entire Claeys family. I spent many hours of my youth at the Claeys home and none of them were boring with Chuck around. Thanks for all the great memories Coach Claeys.

Chuck was a classmate of mine and we graduated from Atkinson High School in 1958. Chuck was a paperboy for the Moline Dispatch when he was in grade school and delivered the paper all over Atkinson for years. He played basketball in grade school starting in the 3rd grade and continued till high school graduation. The country schools consolidated in 1953 and I joined him at St Anthony's grade school. We later played baseball and football together in high school. Chuck could do anything anything. As an altar boy, he could say the confiteor in latin. If you didn't say it right, Fr Kern would yell at you in front of the whole church. That why I wasn't an altar boy. Nothing bothered Chuck, I can still see him saying "mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa". He knew all the prayers and never made a mistake. I am glad I grew up with him. When I think of Atkinson, Chuck comes to mind.

Our condolences to Mary Helen and the kids. Chuck was a wonderful, fun loving guy, a great public servant and true friend. There was never a dull moment when Chuck was "in the house". We know he will be dearly missed by his many, many friends from IH, the Democratic Party and the people he served in Henry County. Our prayers are with the family tonight. May he rest in peace!
