Dorothea M. (Young) Thorp

Dorothea M. Thorp, 90, of Geneseo, passed away Tuesday, July 28, 2015, at Hillcrest Home in Geneseo.  A funeral service celebrating her life will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 1st at Vandemore Funeral Homes, Geneseo.  Reverend Chris Ritter will officiate.  Cremation rites will follow after the services and private inurnment will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Geneseo.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service (1-2 p.m.) at the funeral home.  Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church.

Dorothea was born on February 9, 1925, in Charleston, IL, the daughter of Roy and Anna (Fisher) Young.  She graduated from Mattoon High School.  She was united in marriage to C.R. “Randy” Wade on October 1, 1943, and they later separated.  She then married Dale Thorp on March 24, 1999.  He preceded her in death in 2001.  Dorothea was the clothing department manager at Farm & Fleet in Geneseo for over 25 years, from which she retired.

Dorothea was a member of the First United Methodist Church and belonged to the Order of Eastern Star and the United Methodist Women.  She had been active at church for many years, helping with church bazaars and teaching Bible school.  Dorothea was an avid reader.

She is survived by her daughters, Sharon (Stanley) Greenwood, Creal Springs, IL, and Lainie Wade, Geneseo, IL; seven grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale; her daughter, Dianna Sue Alexander; her parents; one sister, Marguerite Higgins; one grandson, Chris Ullrick and one great-grandson, Tyler Ullrick.
