Dear Karen and Jeff: What can I say about your dad. I just remember the good times we had living as neighbors in DeWitt. Your folks were good friends. Your Mom & I talk via phone a lot after we moved so was able to keep up with you both fart the grands. This is so hard for me to find the words I want to say. Know I am thinking of you both during this time.

To the Marshall family:
Please accept my heartfelt sympathy to you for the passing of Oddie. He and Bev were some of my first people who were interested in growing asparagus who shared 50,000 asparagus crowns (roots) among 6 other people to start his 1/2 acre in Dewitt, IA in 1986. I was the county horticultural agent in Rock Island County and was able to spark his interest in the crop. I spoke to Oddie a few years ago and he was very excited to tell me about his work in getting a school principal interested in planting asparagus for the students. He was a hard worker and was an inspiration to me and many other people. I thank him for his service to his country and he will be remembered by all of whose lives were touched by him. Rest in peace, Oddie.

Sincerely,
Carl Cantaluppi

Just a couple years out of high school and home on summer vacation from the U of Iowa, is when I was introduced to Oddie. As a novice in the field of "real" work, my years with Oddie had me emerge as a pole barn/hog confinement fabricating machine. Well let's just say I received a different sort of education, one where labs and lectures took place is cars, trucks and station wagons and on desert like open fields, under shade in way too brief lunch breaks and in the occasional saloon.
The physical labor was initially shocking. Swinging 32 oz waffle tipped hammers and driving pole barn spikes left imprints on both lumber and fingers. One recollection during my freshman year at Huskee Built occurred at the end of one hot miserable day. I smacked Oddie in the leg with a sledge hammer while attempting to drive a 2x4 brace support into the ground. He never flinched. As I reeled back apologizing in fear, all he said was, "Had that been the other one, you'd be walking home tonight." That was an insight to his great sense of humor.
I acquired and developed many attributes during my tenure at Oddie University. Endurance was one. Perseverance another. Quite an enlightened vocabulary ranks right up there, along with a motto of "work hard, play hard, but don't miss." Continually getting back in the saddle comes to mind.
Having survived my years on the Huskee Tour I graduated to commercial roofing, that of enormous flat roofs on schools, hospitals, malls and factories. The Oddie education served me well, as this new endeavor was hard work times ten. One job had me staying in Wapello, Ia. I met a gentleman in a bar who was from Morning Sun.
"Elwood Marshall? Yea, I remember him. His spikes were always high sliding into second base and he'd take you into the wall on the basketball court. You never got an uncontested lay up when he was playing."
The most important attribute? Respect. Outside of my Dad, there's no one I respect more than Oddie. And I expect to pay additional tribute to both of my mentors when we meet again: Good Lord willin' and the creek don't rise!"

Karen and Jim my thoughts and prayers are with both of you. Your father was one of the best coaches I had in my youth and was a great person. I can still recall a few of the conversations your father had with me regarding baseball. Always remember the great times you shared as a family as they can never be taken away.

I was very sorry to hear of the loss of Oddie. He was a hard-working, great guy who did so much for so many. Each year my dad had several bags with special seeds that needed to be planted in his garden from Oddie.

He always called me "the politician" as he was supportive of my school board campaigns and encouraged me to put signs on his highway facing property. We would ride along his fields in his golf cart to put them up.

We have lost a generous soul. May Oddie rest in peace and each of you find comfort in your special memories of him.

I first met Oddie while working in the produce department at North Scott Foods. He was a loyal customer that always had a smile on his face. I got to know him even better when we were on the same Honor Flight. What a character! We need more people in this world like Oddie, he will be missed.

I am so sorry to hear of Oddie's passing. I am a nurse in Dr. Fowler's' office in DeWitt and Oddie was one of our special patients. We will miss him and his keen sense of humor. He always brought produce to the office for us and was such a hard worker, who never let his disabilities hold him back. Please accept our sympathy.
