I worked with Jim on the survey boats with the Corps of Engineers. Jim was a character that I will remember for the rest of my life. It would give him great pleasure to "torment" me in all his special ways, but when I needed help he was there every time. I remember one time we had to walk out on the ice of the Mississippi River and check the depth of the water - I was petrified. I told Jim that he better not mess with me out on the ice because when we got back to shore, I would hurt him! Jim could see that I was scared and for a brief moment he put his entertainment aside and showed me great compassion. I learned a great deal from him and if not for him, I would have failed at that job. One story that clearly shows his humor, Jim instigated a very loud argument between myself and the boat captain. Jim later told me that he was at first enjoying watching two 300 lb walruses going at each other, until he realized that he could get squashed if we actually came to blows! I could fill a book with Jim stories. To all of his family, my deepest compassion on your loss, Jim was a good man.
