Melvin Peasley

Melvin L. Peasley, 86, of Colona, passed away Friday, September 2, 2016 at his home. A private memorial service has been held for Melvin and his wife Phyllis. Private inurnment will take place at Colbert Cemetery at a later date. As per his wishes, Cremation Rites have been accorded by Vandemore Funeral Homes & Crematory, Geneseo, who are assisting the family with arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mel was born on January 17, 1930 in Sunbury Township, IL, the son of Walter and Opal (Folks) Peasley. He graduated from Stanford Community High School in 1948. After a few years working and proudly serving in the US Army, he studied at the University of Illinois, earning a degree in Agriculture, specializing in plant breeding. During his professional career, he worked for several seed companies developing new varieties of hybrid corn. Mel worked for Ferry-Morse Seed Company in Geneseo, IL before forming Intra-America Seed Services with Robert Henderson in Geneseo. After retirement, Mel enjoyed spending more time on his favorite activities, fishing and gardening. He will be remembered for sharing his gardening knowledge with anyone who asked and for always having a story to tell. United in marriage to Phyllis A. Laidig on March 14, 1954, they shared 62 years of love before she preceded him in death on June 15, 2016.

Mel is survived by his daughters: Elda Cunningham of East Moline, IL, Mary (Doug) Brace of Xenia, OH, Gay Larson of Geneseo, IL, and Leah Peasley of Cedar Rapids, IA; sons: Michael Peasley of Colona, IL, Eric (Gabi) Peasley of St. Peters, MO, and Melvin Jr. (Stacey) Peasley of Bowersville, OH; grandchildren: Richard Brace, Molly Meyers, Tyler Peasley, and Elsbeth Grassel.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Phyllis, one sister Elda, two brothers Thurman and Duane, and 2 son-in-laws Robert Cunningham and Mark Larson.
