Genevieve was born on November 16, 1919, in Geneseo to Seth and Clara (Klahvon) Johnson.  At the age of 5 she contracted scarlet fever which left her severely deaf, but she taught herself to be a lip reader.  She graduated from Geneseo Township High School in 1937 and attended Moline Business College in Moline. She also received her certificate to be a home decorator.

On September 4, 1943, she married Eldon W. Yager in Geneseo at Grace United Methodist Church where she was a lifelong member and member of the Rose Circle. Genevieve was executive assistant to the director of Illinois Bell Telephone in Moline. She left that position after the birth of her children, but continued working as an accountant for her husband’s farm equipment operation.

Music and theater were a passion. She played the piano and regularly attended concerts, plays, and musical events.  She held season tickets for the Quad City Music Guild from its first performance until well into 2000 and for other area musical groups, including the Fine Arts Club. She was one of the founding members of the Richmond Hill Barn Playhouse and served for years on its board of directors and as its ticket chair.

Genevieve and her husband, Eldon, were very active in the Illinois Republican Party. They served as chairs of Sen. Charles Percy’s campaign in Henry County, numerous state office campaigns, and congressional campaigns. They served as Congressman Tom Railsback’s county campaign managers for his entire career. Genevieve was also appointed by Gov. James Thompson to the Illinois Council on Aging. Genevieve and Eldon were also very involved in various community projects, including raising funds for the first swimming pool and the library in Geneseo.

She and her husband considered themselves a team, and they enjoyed joining their children and other family members in various activities. Genevieve loved to travel and did so widely, visiting Mexico, South America, the Caribbean, Asia, North Africa, and Europe, and most of the United States.

Genevieve is survived by her daughter, Brenda Lee Yager of Alexandria, Virginia and Chicago, IL; her son, Kent W. Yager of Springfield, Illinois; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by husband, parents, sister, Waunita Long, and brother, Eldon Johnson.
